THE PROJECT:

For centuries, residents of Terrebonne and Lafourche parish bayou communities have worked and lived within the productive wetlands of Louisiana's coast. These are America's "working wetlands" that now support billions of dollars of offshore oil and gas infrastructure, protect thousands of miles of pipelines, serve as a sanctuary for migrating waterfowl , and nourish a bountiful supply of wild shrimp, crabs and game fish.
However, a deadly combination of coastal erosion, saltwater intrusion and subsidence have acted as thieves in the night, stealing the oak ridges, cypress forests and barrier islands that once protected the City of Houma and over 200,000 area residents from killer storms.
There is a plan for salvation:
The Morganza-to-the-Gulf Hurricane Protection System
The proposed Morganza-to the-Gulf Hurricane Protection Project is a $888 million levee, lock and floodgate system designed to defend the people, property, infrastructure, and environment of Terrebonne and parts of Lafourche Parishes in south Louisiana against devastation by future hurricanes and tropical storms.
