THE REGION
The coastal Louisiana parishes of Terrebonne and Lafourche are
located along the Gulf of Mexico, approximately 60 miles southwest
of New Orleans. The City of Houma is the economic hub of the region.
Over 200,000 residents in this nationally significant area are
currently living and working without any form of hurricane protection,
along with thousands of businesses that support America's oil and gas production
and valuable seafood harvest.
In the summer of 2005, over 10,000 homes and businesses in
our unprotected coastal communities with names like Chauvin, Bayou
Dularge, Dulac and Montegut were inundated by up to nine feet of tidal
surge as Category 3 Hurricane Rita approached the southwest corner of
Louisiana, approximately 180 miles to the west of Terrebonne Parish. Over $75 million in damage was caused by 40-mile-per-hour south winds from a storm that did not
even hit our coast!
The Morganza-to-the-Gulf Hurricane Protection System is a sound plan for our salvation.
