THE REGION: WHY HERE?


Hurricane protection is criticial to Terrebonne and Lafourche parishes because:

• Local, national and international companies located in the Terrebonne and Lafourche metropolitan area, including the City of Houma, provide support services for Port Fourchon and service 20 percent of this nation's oil and gas supply.

• Our wetlands are home to over 9,300 miles of oil and gas pipelines that provide heat and gasoline to Americans everywhere.

• Our wetlands are the most bountiful in the nation, supplying 40 percent of America's seafood and playing an integral role in America's migratory bird flyway.

• 40 percent of the all coastal wetland loss in the United States occurs in the Morganza project area, an average of seven square miles of land loss a year, significantly increasing our vulnerability to catastrophic loss of life and property from storm surges.

• Terrebonne and Lafourche Parishes are located only 60 miles southwest of New Orleans, serving as "speed bumps" for storms approaching that city from the west.

Federal authorization and funding are all that stands between our risk of future devastation and the security provided by a completed Morganza-to-the-Gulf Hurricane Protection System.
