THE PROJECT: WHY MORGANZA?

• For 15 years, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers studied and analyzed the Morganza-to-the-Gulf project, and concluded in its feasibility study and environmental impact statement that the proposed system will achieve the desired level of storm surge protection, while offering benefits of environmental preservation.

• The levee alignment is built along natural ridges, roadbeds or existing drainage levees, and follows existing hydrologic barriers, limiting impacts to our estuary and coastal marshes.

• Developed by a team of interagency engineers and scientists, Morganza-to-the-Gulf has the support of federal, state and local leaders, as well as local residents, who understand the urgency of the project. It is included in the 2007 Louisiana Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority Master Plan.

• Through adaptive implementation and management , post-Hurricane Katrina design modifications have been made to the system design. Additonal modifications are possible as construction progresses and new scientific information becomes available that would increase the effectiveness of the system.
